FAQs

What is a Privilege Offset?

A Privilege Offset is a financial contribution from privileged individuals to promote the welfare of African Americans and other minorities.

Why should I bother buying a Privilege Offset?

A Privilege Offset accomplishes two goals at once:

  1. It helps fund real, positive change regarding race in our country.
  2. It serves as a real, financial recognition of privilege, and when people support something financially, they take it more seriously in other areas of their life as well.

When I buy a privilege offset, where does my money go?

We discuss this in more detail in the Terms and Conditions, but we primarily fund three types of projects, in order to effect real change on three levels: the societal, the individual, and the economic levels:

How are you sure that Privilege Offsets actually make a difference?

Our team individually vets every single project to ensure low overhead and maximum impact. Feel free to reach out regarding our process for determining which projects to support by emailing us at support@privilegeoffset.com

How can I know the money is actually going to the places you say it is?

We value transparency and accountability, and therefore release annual reports which show in detail where funds have gone the previous calendar year. Reports are sent out by email each January to those who request a copy. If you would like a copy, please email support@privilegeoffset.com, with "Annual Report" in the subject line, and we will happily add you to our list of recipients.

Is Privilege Offset a non-profit or for-profit?

Privilege Offset LLC is intentionally a for-profit social enterprise. As a social enterprise we are mission and value driven. Our success as an organization depends on how much good we are able to do. The more members we have, the more good we do. As a for-profit organization, we have to be upfront with what we charge. Unlike non-profit organizations, we can't get away with telling you that all your money is going to charity just because we're a non-profit, when really 36.9% percent of your money is going to overhead- and not the programs you think you're supporting (source). We charge a 10% service fee. That's it. Far less than the average non-profit overhead. If we spend more than that, it comes out of our pocket, not yours. If we spend less than that, we make some money to pay our salaries.
In other words, being for-profit forces us to spend less on overhead or we don't get paid, unlike non-profits who spend through the roof on overhead and can still pay their executives big salaries.

What Sets Privilege Offset apart from the other organizations raising money for this cause?

Three things:

  1. As outlined above, we have a financial incentive to keep overhead low, meaning more of your money goes to doing good.
  2. We are a one-stop shop that allows you to support African Americans and other minorities in all areas of life in one simple place. We support projects on the societal, economic, as well as the individual levels.
  3. Privilege Offset is the only way you are able to contribute to our proprietary Grant program, which supports individuals and families who have personally been victims of racism or discrimination, who may have no place else to go for help.
